 Introduction | Table of Content

This 2006 edition of a CD-ROM textbook on oral pathology is a revision of the 1999 CD-ROM edition. There are several updates and a few corrections. The changes have been primarily to the text including the text of the figures, but the figures have not been changed or added to. One of the values is the great number of images as well as the detailed legends to each, helping to embellish the text and to increase the learning experience by pointing out what should be seen and understood for each image.

The 1999 CD-ROM edition was a modified textbook on oral pathology that was first published in 1975. There was a second edition in 1984 and a third in 1989. The original textbook was intended for dental hygienists but dental students as well as dentists found it useful. The six chapters include most subjects taught in a traditional oral pathology course. A unique feature of the CD-ROM edition is the interactivity. One can manipulate the menu at the bottom of the page to find out what each chapter offers and can click on any specific item to get to that section. Key subject areas and disease entities have been identified in each chapter for ease of access.

A special feature of this text is the great number of images in color along with the detailed legends to explain and amplify the learning facts of each image. Each figure flows with the text and is seen in the chapter as a thumbnail that can be expanded along with the text of the figure. The colors add a significantly new dimension for a better understanding of the material. In addition, an attempt was made to offer several examples of various entities so that the student may appreciate a spectrum of what may be seen in a variety of patients.

This text was expanded to include more examples of histopathology, which will be very beneficial to dental students. There has been an effort to increase information on odontogenic tumors, bone diseases and other entities that were only briefly covered in the original paperback.

I dedicate this work to my students who have inspired me. I hope students may be inspired in return to appreciate this important area of dentistry.

I would like to acknowledge the work of Joseph Krajekian, a marvel with computer workings and responsible for getting this project ready for delivery. Without his kind and dedicated help, this would not have come to fruition.
